The Oscar and Elsa BRAUN Foundation

"The Oscar and Elsa BRAUN Foundation" is a non for profit organization for the progress of medicine and health, based in Chile.

Mr. Oscar Braun Hamburger (1870-1937), native of Latvia, a Baltic republic governed by Russia, was the third son of Mr. Elias H. Braun and Mrs. Sofia Hamburger, whom emigrated from Russia to Magellan in southern Chile in 1874.

Mr. Oscar Braun Hamburger married Mrs. Elsbeth Saalfeld, who was born in Germany in 1900. The couple did not have descent. When Mrs. Saalfeld died in 1956, her legacy iniciated the Oscar & Elsa Braun Foundation.

The Braun Dinasty
In Magellan, Mr. and Mrs. Elías BRAUN received from the Chilean government a small plot of land, some animals and food for six months in exchange for settling in the zone.

In two decades, the BRAUN family had gained control over nearly 1.376.160 hectares of land in the Argentinian and Chilean Patagonia.

In those lands they raised 1.250.000 sheep that produced yearly 5.000 million kilograms of wool, 700 thousand kilograms of leather and 2.500.000 kilograms of meat.

The BRAUN properties covered since the Chubut in Argentina to the Strait of Magellan.

The BRAUN also owned a mining company that exploited copper, banks, ships, insurance companies, telephone services, etc.

The BRAUN family from Magellan has descendents in both Chile and Argentina.
